While the story of Forspoken revolves heavily around Frey Holland coming to understand the circumstances of her separate lives in New York and Athia, much of her history remains shrouded throughout the narrative. There are hints and clues as to who Frey really is, and revelations made about her role in Athia by the end, but her full backstory has a lot of potential to be completely told in Forspoken’s upcoming DLC.
One of the most important pieces of information for understanding who Frey is in Forspoken is learning who her parents were and why they might have abandoned her in New York as a baby. Part of that story is explained in the base game so far, but there are still mysteries that could play a part in either DLC or a sequel.

Who is Frey’s Dad?
Over the course of Forspoken’s main storyline, players learn that Frey’s mother is Tanta Cinta, and she was the giant dragon that attacks her at the start of the game. However, players never get to meet her father. There are a few clues given towards his identity, such as the fact that he was originally from New York and his name is Alfred, a name that Frey would eventually inherit. Additionally, Cinta claims that Alfred is a hero who taught her about New York after the two met when the Tanta visited the other world through a Torana.
Beyond this, there is very little to go on about who Frey’s father could be. Only a handful of people in Cinta’s realm of Junoon even knew that she was pregnant, and the entire area was overcome by Forspoken’s corrupting Break shortly after Frey’s birth. So, of the people that even knew that the Tanta even had a child, the majority of them were either killed during the fall of Athia or had lost their minds like the other Tanta.
Reading Between Forspoken’s Thick Lines
It can be easy to dive into the lore of Forspoken and take everything at face value, including the story Cinta tells about meeting Frey’s father and the child they would eventually have together. However, this part of the story is told in fairly broad strokes, and there are some pieces that can be inferred, even if they aren’t stated quite as plainly as Cinta’s personal struggles or her love for her daughter. Specifically, it would appear that the reason Frey doesn’t have parents in New York, even though that is where her father is from, is likely because Alfred was already dead by the time she was born.
These hints come from Forspoken’s dialogue; many of Cinta’s word choices have a subtle intention at conveying what she has gone through. Specifically, whenever she talks about Alfred, she mentions him in the past tense, something very common when someone is talking about a loved one who has passed, rather than one who is simply far away. Then there is the statement about him being a hero, which could imply that he sacrificed himself in some way in order to help Cinta. This could have possibly been done to return her to Athia, or perhaps he just saved her from a random twist of fate.
From this point, pulling at the threads of the narrative to find anything else about Frey’s father is difficult, considering that there are only a few lines spoken about him. Regardless, having future content explain why he is gone could go a long way towards fleshing out Frey’s family in Forspoken and answer why she has been alone all her life.
Forspoken is available now for PC and PS5.
