Griffin was born with amniotic band syndrome, a condition causing the hand to be underdeveloped, and his left hand was amputated when he was four years old.
Similarly, Abbott was born without a right hand, but went on to pitch 10 years in the majors and he also added a gold medal from the 1988 Olympics to his resume.
From one athlete who knows the adversity it takes to compete at the highest level without a hand to another, Abbott was full of support for the linebacker out of UCF.
After Griffin was selected Abbott tweeted: “Thrilled for you @Shaquemgriffin. Beyond words…”
Leading up to the draft, Abbott sent a special message to the linebacker by writing: “Football is only a small part of what makes you special.”
